Reception at the Southwest Collections, Texas Tech Campus

A reception at the Southwest Collections/Special Collections Library will be held for interested TAS members on Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the Texas Tech campus.  The reception will coincide with a special exhibit entitled "The Medieval Southwest: Manifestations of the Old World in the New," an exhibit which will run from August 14, 2008, to April 5, 2009.  The exhibit will highlight discovery, the development of southwestern institutions, and contemporary echoes.  Among the topics to be covered are the origins of local cattle culture, local musical traditions, and the campus's Spanish Renaissance architectural theme.  Of particular interest to the TAS, however, will be the displays of recently discovered Coronado artifacts from Blanco Canyon and of artifacts unearthed during Texas Tech's and TAS's excavations of the San Sabá presidio and mission.  The reception is free; however, interested parties must sign up to attend since the event is limited to 50 people.  A cash bar and light hors d'oeuvres will be provided.  Each participant will receive one free beverage ticket; additional beverages can be purchased.  Participants will have to find their own transportation to campus, but parking will be made available for all who attend.  The museum is located on campus at 15th and Detroit.
