Teacher Workshops 2010The following is a schedule of activities that the Texas Archeological Society offers to teachers. Look for the Teacher Training spot on the Field School Registration Form to sign up for the program. The fee is $10 per person. "First Friday Night," 8:00 PM-9:00 PM in the barn. This teacher workshop will feature a DVD about the Gault Site, a major Clovis site in North America. A discussion and Q & A will follow the video. Teachers will be given their packets containing handouts, crossword puzzles, a list of archeological websites, and information about CPE credit during Field School. This will also be a time to mix and mingle and talk about what can be learned at Field School and taken into the classroom. Saturday afternoon, 3:00 PM-4:30 PM. Flintknapping activity. All teachers will have a chance to make their own tools using techniques that Dr. Paul Smith will demonstrate. Teachers will be provided with goggles, pads, and of course, bandaids! Handouts provided. Monday afternoon, 3:00 PM-4:00 PM. "Making Fire the Old-Fashioned Way" will be led by Neal Stilley. Teachers will get a chance to try to produce fire using various "friction" techniques. All materials will be provided as well as safety equipment. There will be handouts for teachers along with safety tips. Yes, this activity can be done at school. Time permitting, there will be an atlatl spear-throwing contest conducted by Robin Matthews. Wednesday afternoon, 3:00 PM-4:00 PM. May Schmidt will lead an activity titled "Thinking Outside the Box." This activity is for small groups and is adaptable for any age student. May will also lead an activity titled "Button Making." Note: Teachers should bring their cameras to all teacher workshops; don't forget to bring water to drink, as the temperature may be warm during the afternoon sessions. |
