Meet the Regional Director — Barbara Chadwick
Regional News - June 2010
Nothing to report from Region 4 this quarter...except that my students did very well on their TAKS scores, exemplary in social studies, and I am tired!!! Planning to spend more time on TAS now that school is over!
Respectfully submitted

Hi, fellow dirt-diggers! I am a native Texan, born in Marshall, Texas, while Mom and Dad were on vacation from Houston…I arrived two weeks early. Guess I couldn’t wait to get to Texas!
I grew up in Houston, on the southeast side, and my first archeological experience will be familiar to folks my age from that area – digging for arrowheads in Humble Woods! Of course, now I realize we were miniature looters, but, after all, we were just kids and the oil company gave us permission! I was always interested in archeology but my high school counselor told me only boys could do that! So, with a major in communications, I attended the University of Houston, dropped out, got married, traveled the country following my “radio dude” husband, had 2 sons, got them back to Texas in time for school (so they could talk right!), and spent 15 years as a firefighter.
In 1997 my husband retired and we moved to East Texas from Houston. I went to work for a company that supplied packaging supplies for the brick industry. There I became acquainted with a TAS member who told me all about Marfa and all my childhood fantasies came back! My first TAS field school was Gault – talk about starting at the top! – and I haven’t missed one since. I left my job, went back to college at Stephen F. Austin (not only close to home, but I had the privilege of studying under Dr. Jim Corbin) and earned my anthropology degree with an emphasis in archeology and a minor in history. I am currently a highly qualified teacher of social studies (8-12 composite) and teach 8th grade US History at Jacksonville Middle School.
I was honored to be asked to be the Region 4 Director for the next three years and hope to serve well. My goal is to contact the historical and genealogical societies on all 34 counties in our region with an eye toward increasing interest in East Texas archeology.
