Meet the Regional Director — Jennie Galvan

Regional News — January 2008

The Rio Grande Delta Archeological Society is planning an organizational meeting in January.  Summer activities went well, as did the Archeology Fair in October.  There was so much information, new ideas and new contacts gleaned at the Annual TAS meeting this year.  Focus at this time is centered on the local society and setting up the necessary officers.  The vision is to see other societies started within the region, along with a web site to promote History and Archeology in our own backyard, of which I have begun.

There has been more of an interest locally in the museums of Brownsville.  More activities accessible to the local people have begun.  A combination of advertising and pulling down the veil that has kept the local community from visiting the very places that deal with their heritage will definitely make all feel welcome.

We are making plans for the upcoming summer, to coordinate with other societies locally, and schools, for the education in preservation of our history.  One thing interesting about archeology is that it is something anyone can be part of and participate.

I and the local society here will be putting forth a special effort to present programs and workshops to folks in this area, and give our youth the opportunity of experiencing an avenue they may wish to pursue.  Teaching preservation, especially to those of a young age, will establish some values that will grow with them.

We have speakers, presentations, field trips when possible. A great way to find out what is happening with Area and State Activities, workshops and events with pass out material for those that are interested.

As always, comments and suggestions are welcome.

Contact me if you would like to be on the mailing list to receive the monthly E-Newsletter, and updates on statewide Activities as they become available.

I have enjoyed the Hospitality Industry for 24 years with previous retail experience.  I climbed from food preparation to head cook to the top of the Hotel/Restaurant Management Business.  Duties included everyday meals, group meetings, weddings, buffets, and conventions at the Holiday Inn.  A short stunt at a nursing home gave me the experience at special diet food preparation that required a Texas Food Service License.

Growing up in the farmland of Iowa, traveling to the orange groves of Florida, to the peaceful backwoods of Oklahoma, and finally to Deep South Texas.  I have dealt with people directly in all my positions giving me experience with a variety of people and organizations with cultural diversity that has been good for RV park leadership, currently in Brownsville, Texas.

My interests in Archeology started as a young child in the farmland of Iowa, exploring old farmhouses and equipment, reading all the neat stuff about Egypt and foreign lands.  My love for Archeology has never waned, and I have committed myself to the Deep South land of Texas I have grown to love.  I would like to do what I can to meet the needs of those interested in their heritage and culture in this area of Texas.  For those of you, who wish to get involved, don’t know who or how to get started, please give me a call or E-Mail.
