FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 1, 2007
DID YOU EVER WANT TO BE AN ARCHEOLOGIST? NOW YOU CAN!
To celebrate the 250 year anniversary of the Spanish colonial
presence in Menard County, the Presidio de San Saba Restoration Board and the
Texas Archeological Society invite you and your family to spend a few days or a
week with them learning about Texas archeology. The field school will be
staffed with experienced professionals and avocational archeologists who will
offer quality guidance and instruction for everyone from beginner to veteran,
child to senior. If being an archeologist is your dream, then set aside
June 9 – 16, 2007 for your adventure to begin.
This year, the focus of the field school is the
eighteenth-century Spanish fort, Presidio de San Saba, the largest military
outpost on the Spanish frontier. Not only will the excavations, under the
direction of archeologist Tamra Walter of Texas Tech University, address
specific questions about the lives of soldiers and their families of that time,
but also, will give children and their parents from Texas and beyond, an
opportunity to actually touch the past.
TAS Field School offers so much to so many: a first-class family
adventure where learning and fun fuse together, an accreditation program for
teachers of all levels, training for Boy Scout leaders to teach the Archeology
Merit Badge, and scholarships to college students and to Native Americans to
learn about their past.
The field school statistics reveal that TAS Field Schools rate
above and beyond other vacation destinations. So, why not join us and have
your dream come true?
The Texas Archeological Society is a statewide organization that
promotes the awareness, study and preservation of archeology in Texas. TAS
publishes a major scholarly journal, a quarterly newsletter and maintains two
web sites. The primary activities of the Society are the Texas
Archeological Academies (spring), Field School (summer) and Annual Meeting
(fall). Visit us at
