The TAS Board of Directors and the Executive Committee will meet in Austin on Saturday, January 18, 2025. The meeting will also be available to attend via Zoom.

In addition to the regular meetings, there will also be several presentations and committee break-out sessions. The meeting will start in the morning and will last all day.

2023 TAS ANNUAL MEETING SILENT AUCTION

Beat the heat by clearing out your jewelry box, library, attic, garage, or storage unit! While this activity is guaranteed to result in a sense of personal satisfaction, you will likely find some treasures that would be perfect for the TAS Silent Auction. We especially welcome jewelry (vintage items are great!), arts and crafts, books, gift baskets, field kits, bed and breakfast getaways, and anything else that you think a fellow TAS member would enjoy. We know that many of you are artistic in a variety of media so show off your talents by donating a creation or two to the auction.

You are welcome to bring your donations with you to the TAS Annual Meeting. Contact Pat Mercado-Allinger, Silent Auction Chairman at am-auction@txarch.org if you have any questions or cannot attend the meeting and need to coordinate delivery.

Remember that the proceeds of each auction support the important activities of TAS. Be sure to make regular visits to the Silent Auction room to ensure that you aren’t outbid by your TAS friends!

February 2024 Archeology Workshop for Educators - registration open!

Educators are invited to attend a one-day workshop about introducing archeology into your lessons.

Background information will be presented, and hands-on lessons demonstrated. Multiple resources will be distributed with relevant TEKS defined. TAS is a provider of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) through the SBEC, but district level approval would guarantee credit for career portfolios.

The slate of nominees to fill the 2024 TAS Board vacancies has posted in the Member Business section of the TAS website. Included on the page are relevant bylaws, information about the election, and a form to submit nominations from the floor. The Nominating Committee submitted the names of all of the candidates after much careful consideration and is looking forward to the election during Annual Meeting.

Please note, you must be a current TAS member to serve on the board of TAS and to vote in any election.

Region 4 Director, Victor Galan, appointed to the National Park System Advisory Board

Congratulations to TAS's Region 4 director, Victor Galan (PhD Texas A&M)! Victor was recently appointed to the National Park System Advisory Board along with 14 other new members by Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. Secretary Haaland made the announcement Wednesday, May 24, 2023 stating “These new National Park System Advisory Board members represent experienced practitioners in cultural and natural resources management, as well as experts in relevant academic fields including environmental law, geography, and history. I look forward to their insight as we work to make our public lands accessible and inviting to all.”

In addition to its advisory role, the Board also has a regulatory role in recommending new National Natural Landmarks and National Historic Landmarks and provides recommendations regarding the national historic significance of proposed National Historic Trails. In recognition of the importance of hearing from Tribal voices and perspectives when making management decisions that impact public lands and waters, Secretary Haaland added a requirement that at least one member of the Board be from a federally recognized Tribe.

Please join me in celebrating Victor and this well-deserved acknowledgement of his expertise and the significance of his work collaborating with Tribal communities!

Introducing the 2024 President-Elect Hopefuls!

Introducing your president-elect hopefuls! The Nominating Committee will be forwarding two fine candidates for the position of President-Elect: Aaron Norment and Jimmy Barrera. After serving as President-Elect, the successful candidate will become TAS President in 2025. In keeping with long-standing TAS tradition, we are alternating every year between avocational and professional presidential nominees. Avocational archeologist Diedre Hood will be President in 2024, so the 2025 candidates are both professional archeologists.

We asked Jimmy and Aaron to submit a short blurb and photo, by way of introduction. You can read what the candidates provided on the TAS website here: https://www.txarch.org/2023-TAS-Election/. Pending final approval by the Board in August, when the nominations are made official, these candidates will appear on the ballot for President-Elect this October. Voters will also have the opportunity to name their own write-in candidates.

Remember to vote online during the Annual Meeting. You do not have to attend the meeting to vote, but you do have to be a current member.

Registration for this year's TAS Field School is now open! This year's field school will be held in Nacogdoches county from June 10th - June 17th. This year, TAS is fortunate to conduct excavations at the Gallant Falls Site (41NA344), an important contact period Mission Concepcion site, and two nearby and associated Hainai Caddo structures at 41NA338 (the Ben Gallant site) and 41NA346 (the Belle Gallant site). More information can be found on the Field School page under Activities in the menu bar.

The presentations from last year's TAS Virtual Annual Meeting, originally presented through the Houston Museum of Natural Science, have been posted to the TAS website and can be found here: https://txarch.org/Presentations/

Doug Boyd's presentation focused on the recent archeological excavations of Frost Town, a historically working-class neighborhood in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Carolyn Boyd's visually-driven presentation discussed the laboratory and field methods that she and her team have employed to analyze and study the methods and meaning behind the rock art of the Lower Pecos.

TAS 2023 Proposed Budget and 2022 Financials Available

This budget is subject to change based on the feedback received. A final budget will be voted on by the membership at through online balloting during the upcoming Annual Meeting.

Texas Historical Foundation luncheon honoring Dr. Michael Collins

The Texas Historical Foundation is sponsoring a luncheon to honor Dr. Michael Collins and his groundbreaking archeological work at the Gault site is planned for noon on Friday, October 28, 2022, at the Sheraton Georgetown Hotel. During the event, guests will preview an excerpt from The Gault Film, a documentary by Olive Talley, that looks at the hurdles Mike faced, and the millions of artifacts recovered at the Central Texas site.

The nomination form for the Texas Archeological Society Annual Awards is now live and accepting nominations. Now is your chance to recognize the TAS members and groups involved in TAS activities for their contributions to TAS and to Texas Archeology. The awards are made on the basis of nominations that are received during the summer so that the Awards Committee can reach their recommendations and present them for consideration at the September Board Meeting.

93rd TAS Annual Meeting - Registration Now Open!

93rd Texas Archeological Society (TAS) Annual Meeting will be combined with the East Texas Archeological Conference in Tyler, Texas. The meeting will be held on the University of Texas Tyler campus in the new Soules College of Business Building from October 21 – 23, 2022.

Abstracts and creative ideas are sought for papers, symposia, and posters to be presented at the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Texas Archeological Society on October 21-23, 2022, at the University of Texas at Tyler. TAS encourages presentations by avocational, student, and professional archeologist members on any topic of archeological interest.

Registration for the 2022 Field School is now open! The Texas Archeological Society (TAS) invites members to return to the banks of the Guadalupe River in Kerr County for our annual summer Field School, June 11 - 18, 2022. TAS is being welcomed with open arms by the Hill Country Archeological Association (HCAA) and Kerr County. Special Publication 6 and 7 are now available to purchase

Two long-awaited publications are now available to purchase through the online TAS storefront.

First, Special Publication No. 6 by Dr. Tamra Walter concerns Texas Tech University (TTU) archeological investigations at the site of Presidio San Sabá (41MN1) from 2000 until 2011. An overview of the excavations, historical background, and archeological investigations is provided along with detailed descriptions of the material remains collected excavations. A summary of findings follows and research goals are addressed in light of discoveries made during the more than 10 years of archeological enquiries at Presidio San Sabá.

Second, Special Publication No. 7 by Cristin Embree deals with the findings of the 2001 and 2002 TAS youth group excavations at the Williams-Buck Homestead (41WM272). Investigations focused on an area near a dogtrot structure built by William W. Williams between 1850 and 1851.

EXTENDED 2021 Annual Meeting - CALL FOR PAPERS

Abstracts and creative ideas are sought for posters, papers and symposia to be presented at the 92nd Annual Meeting of the Texas Archaeological Society to be held October 22 -23, 2021. TAS encourages presentations by avocational, student, and professional archaeologist members on any topic of archaeological interest. According to TAS policy, all presenters must be TAS members and be registered for the meeting. The Registrar and Program Committee will ensure membership compliance.

The 92nd Annual Meeting will be held in an entirely online format to ensure the safety of our members while COVID limits in-person gatherings and complicates the logistics of travel.

All presentations must adhere to a 20-minute time limit. Simultaneous virtual sessions will be held on the day of the event. TAS members that register for the conference can move virtually from program to program to attend talks of interest, and they may access all presentations online following the conference.

Symposia may be organized around any topic, area, major project, and/or time period. All symposia will be limited to four papers due to platform limitations imposed by the virtual format.

Poster presentations can effectively convey visual, graphic, and quantitative information and posters reach a larger audience than oral papers. Members are encouraged to consider poster presentations as an alternative to papers. All posters will be uploaded to a virtual bookroom where audience members may post comments and questions to engage with the presenter. Other presentation formats such as panel discussions and demonstrations must receive prior approval from the Program Co-Chairs and Annual Meeting organizers.

Abstracts may be submitted at this time via email to am-papers@txarch.org. The final deadline for receipt of paper abstracts is ~~September 1, 2021~~ September 24, 2021. Symposium organizers must ensure that all abstracts for symposia and symposium papers meet an earlier deadline of August 15, 2021. Poster abstracts must be received by ~~September 1, 2021~~ September 24, 2021. Alternative presentation formats require additional planning, so proposals for such presentations must be received by August 8, 2021.

Presenters must be prepared to present via virtual platform. Contact the Program Co-Chairs with questions about submission dates, formats, and/or equipment. Authors will be notified in early to mid-September if their paper has been accepted for presentation. We look forward to your contribution to this year’s meeting.

September 1 is the deadline for the submission of nominations for TAS awards this year. Please refer to the “Awards” Page under the Member Area on the TAS website for a list of award categories and for the “Nomination Submission Form”. (Please note that for the Awards Committee to recommend a nomination for a vote by the Board, at least 3 members must complete a nomination form in support of an individual member for a specific award, so coordination in this initiative is important.)
