Archeological Investigations

In 2026, we will return to Milam County, just outside of Rockdale, to expand excavations at the site of Presidio San Xavier, 41MM18.  Dr. Tamra Walter will serve as Principal Investigator. Last year, we conducted test excavations to confirm the location of the “lost” presidio, which was occupied by the Spanish from the late 1740s until it was abandoned in 1755. Based on our 2025 findings, we are confident that we located the site during last year's field school, however additional excavations are needed to confirm those results. The 2026 field season will focus on recovering further evidence of the fort, its boundaries, and layout. In pursuit of these goals, we will open large block excavations across the site. This promises to be an amazing week of archeological excavations.

For those who like to walk, another survey is planned as well. If fieldwork isn’t for you, there will be artifacts to process at the field school lab. Start making your plans and don’t forget your trowels. Can’t wait to see all of you there!

Camping, Meals, and Registration

Camping and onsite registration will be at the gorgeous Apache Pass RV park and campground -- Right next door to the site!

A campsite without electricity is included with your field school registration.  A spot with a 20 amp outlet is $25 per night (sign up on the registration form).

The first day of field school is Saturday, June 13, so you will want to arrive on Friday.

Meals and evening programs will also be held at Apache Pass.  Information is available on their website, but you will make your campsite registration through the TAS registration form linked above. Check out this video of Apache Pass.
