Tim Perttula 1953-2025

In January 2025, we lost a true pillar of Texas archeology. Tim was a TAS Fellow and the preeminent Caddo scholar. Tim's family wanted to share his memorial slide show and obituary.

Carolyn Spock 1946-2025

In February 2025,  TAS Fellow Carolyn Spock passed away. Carolyn played pivotal roles in Texas archeology, the TAS, and the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory (TARL), where she worked for 40 years. 

Tom Middlebrook 1952-2024

TAS Fellow Tom Middlebrook passed away in September 2024. Tom had 50 years experience in Texas archeology, was a former President of TAS, and an expert on East Texas archeology and history.

    93rd Texas Archeological Society (TAS) Annual Meeting will be combined with the East Texas Archeological Conference in Tyler, Texas. The meeting will be held on the University of Texas Tyler campus in the new Soules College of Business Building from October 21 – 23, 2022.

    Abstracts and creative ideas are sought for papers, symposia, and posters to be presented at the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Texas Archeological Society on October 21-23, 2022, at the University of Texas at Tyler. TAS encourages presentations by avocational, student, and professional archeologist members on any topic of archeological interest.

    The deadline for receipt of paper abstracts is September 1, 2022.

    Registration for the 2022 Field School is now open! The Texas Archeological Society (TAS) invites members to return to the banks of the Guadalupe River in Kerr County for our annual summer Field School, June 11 - 18, 2022. TAS is being welcomed with open arms by the Hill Country Archeological Association (HCAA) and Kerr County. Mail in and online registration, as well as general information about the event can be found on the TAS Field School page!

    The meeting will take place on Saturday, October 23rd from 12-1 pm during the Annual Meeting. Information on how members who are not attending the Annual Meeting can join will be posted to the Member Business page on the website closer to the meeting.

    Two long-awaited publications are now available to purchase through the online TAS storefront.

    First, Special Publication No. 6 by Dr. Tamra Walter concerns Texas Tech University (TTU) archeological investigations at the site of Presidio San Sabá (41MN1) from 2000 until 2011. An overview of the excavations, historical background, and archeological investigations is provided along with detailed descriptions of the material remains collected excavations. A summary of findings follows and research goals are addressed in light of discoveries made during the more than 10 years of archeological enquiries at Presidio San Sabá.

    Second, Special Publication No. 7 by Cristin Embree deals with the findings of the 2001 and 2002 TAS youth group excavations at the Williams-Buck Homestead (41WM272).  Investigations focused on an area near a dogtrot structure built by William W. Williams between 1850 and 1851.

    The TAS Executive and General Board Meetings are scheduled for this Saturday. Meetings will be held via Zoom. The Executive Committee Meeting will be held from 12 noon until 2 p.m.. The General Board Meeting will be held from 2 - 5 p.m.
